During this weekend workshop participant will be encouraged to 'draw' in differentb ways. A series of exercises designed to explore observation, expression and reflection will involve experimental ways of making marks and developing surfaces. We will also consider collage and layering processes in relation to two- and three- dimensional compositions.
The sessions will offer possibilities for all levels with opportunities for individual exploration, alongside supportive mentoring and shared inspiration. Activities are designed to encourage participants to notice detail, challenge usual approaches, and be aware of their creative responses; developing the confidence to take risks with their ideas and nurture their own artistic voice.

'Tonal Edit' features work by artists using a restricted tonal palette, focusing on subtle tones, hues, surface texture and mark-making. Ideas around subtlety of design and high quality material manipulation – evoking suggestions, intimations, veils, shadows and understatement. The exhibition includes a showcase of work by Gizella K Warburton – whose abstract compositions evolve through the tactile and contemplative process of drawing with paper, cloth and thread. With vessel forms and weathered wood and slate grounds, the work has a raw and simple materiality with layers of detail revealed or hidden as light and shadow pass across and through the surfaces.
There are several pieces by James and Tilla Waters, ceramicists who were apprenticed to the internationally acclaimed Rupert Spira. Paintings by John Paul Cooke, whose evocative, landscape-inspired paintings depict ambiguity and tension against a backdrop of calm, structured space. The unique ceramic sculptures by Antonia Salmon, whose work is represented in private and public collections throughout the UK, Europe, USA, Japan and China.– 'There is a ritual nature to the burnishing and this is repeated when the sculptures are offered to the smoke firing kiln'. The legendary John Maltby whose studio visits are an inspiration and an education - a sculptural ceramicist who recalls early meetings with Bernard Leach... and more....
